A stop in Robertson, known as the “Valley of Wine and Roses,” is highly recommended. Here, you can enjoy wine tastings, beautiful gardens, and a leisurely lunch surrounded by vineyard views. As you continue along the route, you’ll encounter quirky roadside attractions and picturesque countryside that make this drive truly memorable.
Approaching Oudtshoorn, the landscapes of the Klein Karoo unfold before you, and the region’s famous ostrich farms become a common sight. Upon arrival, an ostrich farm tour is a great introduction to the area’s unique heritage and agricultural traditions.

Nestled between the majestic Swartberg Mountains and the vast landscapes of the Klein Karoo, Oudtshoorn is one of South Africa’s most fascinating destinations. Famous as the world’s ostrich capital, the region is home to hundreds of ostrich farms and a rich agricultural heritage.
Beyond its famous birds, Oudtshoorn offers a variety of unforgettable experiences. Visit the Cango Wildlife Ranch for close encounters with a range of wildlife, or explore the remarkable Cango Caves, a vast underground network of spectacular limestone formations that ranks among Africa’s most impressive natural attractions.
Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the region’s unique landscapes and biodiversity, while those seeking a classic African wildlife experience can enjoy a safari adventure at a nearby private game reserve, where iconic African animals can be seen in a beautiful natural setting.

After breakfast, depart Oudtshoorn and travel toward the historic town of Swellendam. The 220 km journey takes you through breathtaking landscapes, winding mountain passes, and some of the Western Cape’s most scenic countryside, making the drive an experience in itself.
Arriving in Swellendam after approximately 2.5 hours, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the town’s charming historic center. Take a leisurely walk through its heritage-rich streets before enjoying lunch at one of the local restaurants.
For those who enjoy nature and wildlife, Bontebok National Park offers excellent opportunities for outdoor activities, scenic walks, and sightings of indigenous wildlife in a beautiful natural setting.

After breakfast, depart Swellendam and travel through the scenic Overberg region toward Cape Agulhas, approximately 110 km away. At the southernmost tip of Africa, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet, take time to explore the rugged coastline, visit the historic lighthouse, and admire the dramatic landscapes that make this area so unique.
Continue your journey toward Gansbaai with a stop in the charming village of Elim, known for its cool-climate vineyards and relaxed countryside atmosphere. Enjoy a wine tasting and light refreshments while taking in the beauty of the Cape Agulhas Wine Region.
After your break, complete the final stretch of your drive to Gansbaai, arriving in this coastal town renowned for its marine life, ocean adventures, and spectacular seaside scenery.

Enjoy a final morning in Gansbaai before continuing to Hermanus, South Africa’s renowned whale-watching destination. The drive is short and scenic, covering just 40 km along the R43 and taking around 30 minutes, giving you plenty of time to enjoy a few last experiences before departure.
For active travelers, a guided fatbike ride across the coastal dunes offers a fun and unique way to explore the landscape. Alternatively, embark on a marine wildlife adventure in Walker Bay, where you may encounter whales, dolphins, seals, penguins, and a variety of seabirds in their natural environment.
After your morning activities, continue to Hermanus and settle into this charming coastal town, famous for its spectacular ocean views and marine life.

Spend your day discovering the many attractions of Hermanus, one of South Africa’s most beautiful seaside towns. Begin with a wine tasting and leisurely lunch at a local wine estate, where exceptional wines and stunning views create the perfect start to the day.
Afterward, explore the town’s highlights, including the Whale House Museum, the historic Old Harbour, and the lively local market area, where you’ll find artisan crafts, boutiques, restaurants, and spectacular ocean views.
From June to December, Hermanus becomes one of the world’s premier whale-watching destinations. Join a whale-watching cruise or enjoy a scenic coastal walk for the chance to spot Southern Right Whales close to shore. During the summer months, the nearby Fernkloof Nature Reserve offers excellent hiking trails through fynbos-covered hills, forests, and dramatic coastal landscapes.

Today’s journey takes you from Hermanus to Stellenbosch, a scenic drive of just under 100 km that takes approximately 1.5 hours. Along the way, consider stopping at Betty’s Bay to visit Stony Point Nature Reserve, home to one of South Africa’s largest African penguin colonies. Here, you can enjoy close-up views of these charming seabirds in their natural coastal habitat.
